Welcome to Ghana, a country rich in African cultural and historical sites, including slaves castles.
Ghana has a population estimated at 21million, was the first country on the African continent to gain independence after colonization.
More than 70 dialects are spoken nationwide. These are
classified in four linguistic groups, Akan,Mole-Dagbani, Ewe and Ga. The most commonly spoken is the Akan language, which is spoken by almost half the population. Two-thirds of Ghanaians are Christians, the remaining are Islam’s, and the traditional animist believers.
Ghana has ten regions which have many miles of beautiful beaches, a rainforest and historical sites that can be visited throughout the year.
Ashanti Region
The Ashanti Region is the cultural heartbeat of Ghana. "Land of the Golden Stool" expressed in the language, passage rites, festivals, cuisine and ordinary day-to-day activities.
Visitors can participate in several traditional events such as funerals, naming ceremonies. Royal Akwasidae held every six weeks at the Royal Palace of the Asante King, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
Greater Accra Region
The Greater Accra Region is the gateway to Ghana and home of the vibrant Capital City of Ghana. The region is one of the most exciting and distinctive regions. Although the smallest region, it is the most densely populated, containing the two great metropolitan areas of Accra and Tema, the Country's major industrial and commercial centres. Kotoka International Airport is located about 12km from the centre of the city. Your stay in the capital will make you feel like a true Ghanaian. Visit the National Museum, James Fort Museum, The Art centre, Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, Labadi Pleasure Beach and other places of interest.
Central Region
The Central Region is located in the southern part of Ghana. The central region is about 150km from Accra, the capital of Ghana.
The Central Region was the former seat of government of the Gold Coast. Cape Coast, the capital of the region, was the seat of the British colonial administration up until 1877. The coastline is famous for its ancient forts and castles built by early European traders; a few of them can be located at Elmina, St. Jago and Cape Coast. These have been identified as World Heritage Monuments by the World heritage Foundation under UNESCO. You will have the opportunity to visit the slave castles at Elmina and Cape Coast respectively. Also to be found in the Central Region is the Kakum national park with its famous canopy walkway and beautiful forest reserve.
Volta Region
This is the most easterly region of Ghana, bordering on Togo; the Volta Region is an area of extraordinary scenic beauty. The rolling hills and valleys, rocky outcrops overlooking Lake Volta, and lagoons, rivers and waterfall makes the Volta region one of nature’s most attractive gift to Ghana. This region has a lot to offer: The Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary, Xavi sanctuary,Mountain Afadjato, the highest mountain in West Africa, Wli water falls and many more places of interest.
Western Region
The Western region is located in the western part of Ghana. Takoradi is the capital of the western region and is 218km from Accra.
The Western Region of Ghana is an integrated complex of beautiful safe beaches and African beach resorts. It has the largest collection of European trading forts (formerly used in the slave trade); the highest tropical jungles; numerous mines, picturesque villages and friendly people; and old architectural styles and vivacious festivals. The western region is also the birth place of the first president of Ghana Dr. Kwame Nkrumah
For beach lovers you will have a good relaxation opportunity at the Busua Beach, (with golden sand beaches ideal for relaxation and swimming).
Eastern Region
The Eastern Region is located in the South-eastern part of Ghana. The Region is about 85km from Accra, the capital of Ghana.
The Eastern Region of Ghana has a rich blend of dramatic landscapes, historical relics and traditional cultures.
The region is dominated by Lake Volta, one of the world's largest man-made lakes, and the Akosombo Dam, the main source of Ghana's hydroelectric power. A favorite excursion is a weekend trip to the Dodi Islands.
The Aburi Botanical Gardens, created as a sanatorium and leisure resort, The Akonedi Shrine at Larteh, the Boti seasonal falls and the Tafo Cocoa Research Institute and the Bunso Arboretum birds and butterfly sanctuary are places you must see in the eastern region.
Northern Region
The northern region is located in the northern part of Ghana. It is 658km from Accra and its capital city is Tamale. The northern is the largest region in Ghana.
The "Mole National Park" is Ghana's premier wildlife reserve. It is located 146km West of Tamale. The Larabanga Mosque and Salaga Slave market are among the interesting places that you can visit.
Upper – East Region
The Upper-East Region is located in the north-eastern part of the country. Bolgatanga is the capital of the upper-east Region and is about 810km from Accra.
The Upper-East Region has a population of 917,253 and covers 7.8% of Ghana's land mass. It is the gateway to Ghana from Burkina Faso, which is the traditional crossroads for the trans-Saharan trade routes.
The Paga Crocodile Pond, Nania Slave Camp,Tongo Rocks, Sirigu Pottery, Naa Gbewa shrine are places of interest that can be visited in this region.
Upper – West Region
The Upper-West Region is located in the north-western part of Ghana. Wa is the capital of the Upper-West Region and it is 740km from Accra.
The Upper West Region has a land area of 8,842 square kilometers, 3% of Ghana’s total land mass. The Dagarba, Lobi, Sisala, Vagla and the Wala, all of who speak distinct languages, inhabit this region.
The Northern Region is also the home for the Gbelle Game Reserve (Sanctuary for many endangered species of wildlife like hippo’s, waterbucks and elephants), Wechiau Hippo sanctuary and the Wa Na’s Palace.
Brong –Ahafo Region

Sunyani, the capital of the Brong Ahafo Region is linked to Accra by first class road and is about seven hours drive between them, at a relatively regular pace. From Sunyani you may then begin your tour, which will take you to the major tourist attractions of Brong- Ahafo.
Buabeng -Fiema Monkey Sanctuary will give you the opportunity to see various species of monkeys and these monkeys live freely with the locals in the community. Another interesting place of visit is the Kintampo Waterfalls. A collection of several waterfalls flowing and disappearing underground and resurfacing about 200 meters ahead. |
